Firstly solar energy is renewable, which means you won’t ever need to worry about running out of sunlight as the sun is a consistent source of power. Another benefit of solar panels is that it requires very little or no maintenance and they are environmentally friendly as they do not release any green house gases or any other gases that could harm the environment.

Currently there is a tariff that is paid for the power generated by the solar panels (called FIT or Feed In Tariff) of just over £0.44p per unit (tax free, index linked, and guaranteed for 25 years) which is 3 times what most people are paying for their electricity supply.

In March 2012 this is going to be reduced so that signing up after the end of March will result in getting a lower payment. The amount of reduction is not yet known, but initial indications suggested that it would be around 7% which would not really matter.  But now there is rumour of a cut of 50% which would kill the market totally.
